Getting an SBA loan shouldn’t start with a mystery
You asked your bank about an SBA loan. They said “we’ll look into it” and went quiet. So you Googled “SBA lenders near me” and got three ads and a map of branches that don’t write SBA loans at all.
Then you tried one of those loan marketplaces. You filled out a form, and 11 brokers you never picked called you before lunch.
Here’s the part nobody tells you: the SBA doesn’t lend money. Banks do. The FDIC counts roughly 4,500 insured banks in America, and only the 2,000+ lenders in this directory wrote SBA loans in the most recent records, fewer than half. Your job isn’t to convince your bank. It’s to find one of the banks already saying yes.
That list used to be buried in federal lending records. Now it’s here, sorted by state, free.

Can any bank give me an SBA loan?
No. The SBA guarantees loans, but only lenders approved by the SBA can fund them, and far fewer actively do. Most U.S. banks wrote zero SBA loans last year. This directory lists the 2,000+ lenders with active SBA lending operations, so you only call banks that can say yes.
What credit score do I need for an SBA 7(a) loan?
Most SBA lenders want a personal credit score of 640 or higher from each guarantor, and many community banks prefer 680. Below 640, look at SBA microloans or CDFI lenders instead. Lenders also weigh cash flow, collateral, and time in business alongside the score.
How long does SBA loan approval take?
Plan on 30 to 90 days from application to funding. SBA Preferred Lenders (PLP) approve in-house and close faster, sometimes inside 30 days. Non-preferred lenders send files to the SBA for review, which adds 2 to 4 weeks. Complete paperwork is the single biggest factor you control.
What is the difference between SBA 7(a) and 504 loans?
A 7(a) loan covers working capital, equipment, acquisitions, and real estate up to $5 million, with negotiable rates. A 504 loan funds fixed assets like buildings and heavy equipment through a certified development company, with fixed below-market rates. Most first-time borrowers want the 7(a).
